To Grandmother’s House We Go

Ben and I are leaving bright and early tomorrow morning for Arkansas!  As a special treat for his birthday, Ben’s Opi and Omi bought a ticket so that he can fly back to Arkansas for a visit (and since I’m his mommy I get to go too)!  We’re so excited that we get to spend 12 days visiting our friends and family!  Our first stop is my mom’s house.  After everything that she’s been through lately, I can’t wait to give her a big hug!  After our stay there we are going to Greenwood…my dad’s house is finally finished and we can’t wait to see it and spend some time there!

Here’s Ben “helping” me pack for our trip today.  I’m happy to report that he seems to be feeling a whole lot better.  For the past three days he’s been running a fever, waking up about every two hours at night, and wanting to be held all day long.  I took the little guy in to see the pediatrition today and thankfully his ears, nose and throat “looked great…just a cold.”  We’d appreciate your prayers as we travel tomorrow…for safety and that Ben’s cold won’t bother him on the flight.

Tomorrow (the 19th) is also my mom’s birthday!!  Happy Birthday, Mom!  We are so thrilled that we get to celebrate with you on your special day!!  We love you lots and we’ll see you soon (it’s not too often we get to say that)!!

Ben’s 1st Birthday Recap

We were very excited to welcome Ben’s Oma to Central Florida the evening before his birthday!  She flew all day across the country (from Washington State) just to be here for the party!  Ben blew kisses for the very first time that weekend and she was the lucky recipient…it was super sweet!!

As soon as we heard Ben begin his usual chatter on the monitor the next morning, we tiptoed into his room to sing “Happy Birthday!”  Other than the fact that there were three very giddy weirdos standing in his room singing to him, I’m pretty sure Ben knew there was something else very special about that day (as evidenced by the huge grin in the pic below that I snapped the morning of his birthday)!!

Aren’t our voices just so melodious at 7:30 in the morning!?!  (The video turned out darker than I expected so it might be difficult to see.)

The next day Ben’s Aunt Candice and Baby Laci arrived!!  After Ben got over his initial curiosity of having someone smaller than him in the house (i.e. trying to pounce, pull, and poke on Laci) they got along beautifully.  Candice and I stayed up way too late each night (until about 1 am) talking, we went walking on most days in the neighborhood, and we did our best to do some shopping…all while trying to coordinate feedings and nap times for the two kiddos.  We had such a good time, and just maybe we’ve finally caught up on all of that sleep we didn’t get!!

On Saturday we celebrated Ben’s BIG day with a super fun backyard bar-b-que.  We ate hamburgers and hotdogs with all the fixin’s, chips, fruit…and for dessert…cupcakes!  I had forgotten how much I LOVE cupcakes.  Total cupcake count for me over the next few days:  8!!  Yea…I’m not proud, but they were so good!  It is for that reason I try not to keep junk food in my house because I clearly enjoy it way too much!

Here’s Ben trying his first bite of cake.  A little uncertain at first.

Ben…definitely enjoying his cake now!

This one I like to call “sugar shock”.   After he had devoured about half of his cake we decided it was best to take it away before he got a tummy ache!  Believe it or not, he did take a nap after eating all of that sugar!

To recap the day I put together the little slideshow below.  Enjoy!!

This was taken the morning after the party.  We hung this football balloon on Ben’s chair for the party (I’m pretty sure I got hit in the face with it that day at least a dozen times!!!).  This boy LOVES balloons!  LOVES ‘EM!  (Note to self:  next year’s gift idea…a balloon…seriously, endless hours of fun!)

A big thanks to everyone that traveled to the party, sent cards and gifts, called and e-mailed.  You all helped to make Ben’s 1st Birthday a truly special day!!

P.S. – To read about Ben’s party from one of the party-goers…click on Ryan and Nichole’s blog.  (Nichole and Jake grew up together in Arkansas and now she and her husband live down the interstate from us in Daytona.)  Her post made me laugh out loud.  Thanks for writing about it Nichole!  We had such a blast with you too!

Happy Birthday, Ladies!

March is a happy month around here with lots and lots of birthdays to celebrate!  The two most recent birthday celebrations were for my stepsister, Lindsey (she turned 23 on the 4th), and one of my best-est buddies, Sonya (she turned 31 on the 5th).  While they were honored on their birthdays, I wanted to give them a BIG SHOUT OUT on the blog too.  Happy Birthday!!  We hope you had a wonderful day!  Love you both bunches and look forward to seeing you in Arkansas next week!!

Diagnosis Pancreatitis

Here’s the latest update about my mom…

Several days after my mom had the needle biopsy of her pancreas we received some very exciting news…NO cancer!!  The doctor was correct in his previous assessment that my mom has pancreatitis, not cancer, and the biopsy was just what we needed to confirm it.  Whew…it was like we were all able to finally exhale after what felt like a lifetime of holding our breath while we waited for the results.  It is just the news we had been praying and hoping for!  We are so thankful!

The night before my mom went in for the biopsy and ultrasound we received some less than encouraging news.  The results from the “tumor marker” test, also known as the CA 19-9 , came back…not good.  The normal range is 0-34 and my mom’s was around 279.  After that we were all feeling a little shaken and many of those feelings of shock, disbelief and sadness came rushing back.  That night as I was lying in bed I could not sleep.  So I began to pray and here’s what happened next…

I’ll admit I was feeling a little angry with this whole situation and before I knew it I shouted to God (silently in my prayer since Jake was asleep next to me), “What do you want from me,” and in the clearest voice almost as if He were whispering in my ear I heard, “I want your heart.”  I replied back, “I’ll give it to you…it really hurts.”  And then it was like I could see His hands, one holding my heart and the other sewing it up with a needle and thread.  Then He gave me this verse from Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”  My Heavenly Father assured me that whether my mom’s diagnosis was cancer or not…we would be okay.  And that is perfect peace that only He can give.

Pretty amazing!!  I can assure you that I have never experienced anything like it before.  I sent the above paragraph in an e-mail to my dad not long after it occurred.  It was as if something moved in me that would not let me stay in bed.  I needed to write it down.  I needed the experience to be told.  I’m so thankful I did.  It is a true testament of God’s faithfulness to us and how he can meet us wherever we are.

I’m sad to say that my mom did not get to join us in Florida for Ben’s birthday as she had planned.  As I mentioned in the previous post about her, she was taken back to the hospital the day after all of this testing occurred and was admitted for a few days.  We missed her lots, but we were certainly celebrating not only Ben’s birthday, but the awesome news we received from the biopsy!!  My mom is at home now, trying to rest (if that’s possible with pancreatitis) and recover.  Please continue to pray that her body will be completely healed soon!
