It’s Officially Official

This little gem came in the mail on Friday.  Ben, Jude and I had just settled into our seats around the table for lunch when the doorbell rang.  Ben immediately wanted out of his chair…anytime the doorbell rings Ben is always the first responder (not to worry, we have a child safety lock on the front door so he can’t open it by himself).  Ben shrieked with excitement when he saw the rather large envelope sitting on our front door step.  The kid is obsessed with mail trucks, UPS trucks, FedEx trucks (you get the idea) and the packages they deliver.  He was completely beside himself when he discovered that our mail woman left a package at our door!  He ever so carefully carried the envelope inside and delivered it to the top of the bar in the kitchen (a safe place out of reach from tiny hands) until Jake could open it when he returned home from work that evening.

Ta-da!!  (Cue ray of light from heaven beaming directly down onto certificate with the angels triumphantly singing the Hallelujah Chorus!!)

Finally, after waiting for it with much anticipation the certificate that makes everything officially official had arrived!!  Certified!  Public!  Accountant!

As most of you probably remember, Jake began studying for the CPA exam in April of last year.  We found out that he passed the Financial Section in mid-June, then the Regulation Section in mid-September, followed by the Auditing Section in late November.  He took the fourth and final section of the exam (the Business Environment and Concepts Section) on November 30th.  And just in time for Christmas, we learned that he had passed it too!!  It was a fantastic Christmas present!!  I remember the day Jake returned home after taking the fourth section in November, he looked like a different person.  I’m pretty sure he was walking on air and he had a huge grin on his face!  I’m not sure that either of us realized just how stressful the entire year-long process had been for all of us (but mostly him) until it was all over!!

Since that time in December when we received the final “passing” letter, we’ve been waiting.  Waiting for the certificate that arrived in the mail on Friday documenting that everything was completed (he also had to take an Ethics Exam in January that he passed with flying colors)!  Ahhhh, success has never tasted so sweet!  Words can’t describe how incredibly proud I am of Jake for passing the exam (not to mention on the first try!!) and how happy and excited I am that he we can put it all behind us now too!

Congratulations, Jake…ahem, excuse me, Mr. CPA…a job well WELL done!  We love you!!

The One-Yearly Anniversary of Jake!

Ben kicked off Jake’s birthday weekend by surprising him with balloons at work on Friday.  I can’t even tell you how excited Ben was about making this special delivery.  I also can’t remember the number of times Ben reminded me about going to pick out the balloons.  Jake brought them home with him at the end of the day…Ben’s been playing with them ever since.

After the balloon surprise we took Jake out to eat lunch at one of our favorite restaurants, Amura.  A Bubba roll for Jake and a boxed lunch of chicken teriyaki for me.  Yummy!  Ben scarfed down Subway and enjoyed a special cookie treat while Jude played happily in his Bumbo.  It was a wonderful lunch!

I’d like to note here that I would have posted this earlier, but we had to make ourselves scarce around the house today while Jake reviewed his study materials one last time for the CPA exam he’ll take tomorrow afternoon.  We found out about a week ago that he passed the second section, Regulation!!  Two down, two to go.  Please pray that he’ll pass the Auditing section tomorrow!  He’s also scheduled to take the fourth (and hopefully final) section of the exam on November 30th!  While Jake was studying, we met up with some friends from Ben’s preschool class at Leu Gardens.  Madison, Miles and Ben had a ball chasing after the butterflies in the butterfly garden, smelling (and picking) the roses in the rose garden and playing chase in the open fields.  This afternoon Ben said, “Mommy, Miles is my best friend.  He talks louder and louder and louder!”  They loved being loud together today and playing tackle!!

After Jake finished his studying for the day and both boys took good afternoon naps, a few friends and neighbors arrived to help celebrate Jake’s birthday.  The weather has been beautiful around here lately!  So, we asked everyone to bring their favorite lounge chair and outside toy and we had a party in the cul-de-sac.  The kids rode their bikes and motorized toys, splashed in the water table and colored on the sidewalks with chalk.  We at pizza, cupcakes and killer cake and toasted to Jake on his special day!

So I guess there are just two words left to say, “Traditional Transitional!”  (hee hee hee…just kidding) “Happy Birthday!”  Jake, you are a wonderful husband and father!  We love you!!

Oh, and another thing…Ben made this for you before he went to bed.  He was adamant about singing Happy Birthday one more time so I thought I’d film it!

And another thing…Happy Birthday to Jake’s cousin, Derek!!  We hope you had a wonderful day!!

And another thing…Congratulations to Jake’s cousin, Shannon and her family…today they welcomed Savannah Reed Sellinger.  Born at 8:43. 7 lbs 11 oz, 18.5 inches long AND  to my cousin Molly and her family…they welcomed a baby BOY today!  Molly was told she was having a girl and, surprise, she had a boy!  What an exciting day!

And another thing…just kidding!!  That’s all folks!

Study Buddies

(Just a suggestion, but I’m going to recommend that you hum the tune “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” while you read this post!)

After a month of waiting and checking the NASBA website 2-3 times per day (if not more), we were elated to learn last week that Jake passed the financial section of the CPA exam with a score of 85 (75 is passing)!  Let me assure you that this was no easy task!  The CPA exam is considered one of, if not the most difficult exam to pass and of all the sections comprising the exam, the financial section is also considered the hardest to pass!

When Jake was promoted to Controller last year, the powers that be strongly encouraged him to get his CPA and when the company offered to foot the bill it was a no brainer…he’d take the exam.  At the beginning of this year, the study materials were ordered and a few weeks later we received a very LARGE box on our doorstep.  It was then that Becker took up residence in our home.  For now we consider Becker an annoying house guest, but we can’t send him packing just yet.  I have a feeling when this whole exam saga is over and done with, we just might have a book burning party.

Speaking of book burning parties…let me digress for a moment.  Typing those three little words…book burning party…made me remember a little book burning party freshman year at JBU.  Anyone want to try to guess the name of the class or teacher??  (Not you, Sonya, since you told me the names of both!)  Yes!  Contemporary Math…oh, how I dreaded, DREADED that class.  And the teacher…her nickname should explain it all, “Ms. Happy Hearts and Stickers.”  No one and I mean NO ONE should be that happy about math THAT early in the morning or ever!  Esh!!  So, yes, when that painful semester was over we celebrated by burning our books behind California dorm!  What a great memory…Sonya and I just laughed hysterically about it while on the phone just now!

So where was I…ah, yes, back to my smarty pants husband who is a math genius and can compute all kinds of crazy numbers in his head whereas I am lucky to come up with the right answer when using a calculator.

Studying for the CPA exam is a major commitment.  Becker recommends that you study for approximately 35 hours a week.  So when you break that down Jake’s schedule looks a little something like this:  8am-6pm: work, 6pm-8:30pm: dinner, family time, put Ben to bed, 8:30pm-11pm: study and then lots of studying (4-6 hours a day) on the weekends.  All of that and he still does not come close to the recommended 35 hours a week, but there really aren’t many hours left.  I’ve been super impressed by his dedication to work, family and the exam!!

On the day we found out that he passed the financial section I called our babysitter immediately.  She watched the boys while Jake and I went out to celebrate!  We had a fantastic dinner at a local Irish pub!  It was splendid!

Since Jake literally does not have the time to study the recommended 35 hours a week, it will take him basically a year to complete all parts (there are a total of 4) and that’s only if he passes each one on the first try.  The plan is for him to take another section of the exam in mid-August  followed by the last two sections sometime in November.  We would greatly appreciate your prayers.  Specifically, that he’ll pass each section of the exam the first time and be a CPA by the end of the year…wouldn’t that be a nice Christmas present!  Way to go, Jake!!  We are super-duper proud of you!

A Job Well Done

To round out the week with more exciting news…Jake received a promotion at work this week!!  His new title is Vice President and Controller!!  He’s worked really hard and we couldn’t be more proud!  Way to go, honey!!

Here’s a little something Ben colored for him.  I should note that this is Ben’s first piece of artwork (please, do not distribute or reproduce the photos without expressed written consent)!  ha ha
